who created God

Who Created God: Biblical Explanation

Explore biblical insight on how God was created, if He was created and when He was created, using factual evidence from the depths of scripture.

The question “who created God ” at first glance, might sound like what a toddler might ask. However, it is one of the raging topics of debate between Christian apologetics and atheists or agnostics. It is also a question that every believer likely has had in their hearts at one point in their life.

According to the principle of causality,

“Everything that has a beginning has a sufficient cause’.

This simply means that for anything to exist, it must have had a beginning or a reason for existing. This supports the view that the universe was made by a Creator, instead of stumbling into existence through the explanation of the big bang theory.

However, many scientists and skeptics also go further to ask: “If God created the universe, then who created God?”

This article, therefore, aims to give the most biblically accurate answer to the question of God’s origin. To help you understand how He goes far beyond science or whatever you can imagine. God is greater than the highs and lows and every other concept that can be summed up in a principle.

It also answers the question of if it is a sin to ask who created God which many people also ask.

What Does the Word God Mean?

The word ‘god’ when spelled with a lowercase ‘g’ is used to refer to a supernatural being or deity, or even a person who is greatly admired or influential.

A physical representation of a deity is also called a god or an idol.

However, when the ‘g’ is capitalized, it is used to refer to the Supreme Being, Creator, and Ruler of the universe in Christianity and other monotheistic religions.

According to Wikipedia, the English word ‘god’ comes from the Old English god, which itself is derived from the Proto-Germanic “ǥuđán”. Its meaning is uncertain, but thought to be rooted in the word “ǵʰeu̯– ” which roughly translates to mean “to pour or libate.”

A slight difference in the translation of other root words can also take it to mean “one to whom sacrifices are made.”

What Does The Bible Say About Who Created God?

It is never a sin to ask who created God. On the contrary, God allows and even desires the believer’s questions because He knows they need such clarifications to understand Him, themselves, and His will for them. Your answers as a Christian however, should come from the Bible which is God’s word to you.

Scripture teaches that God is eternal, and that He had no beginning and will have no end. He was not created and has just always been.

This is logical because following the principle of causality, if God had a creator, we’d be led to ask who created that creator, and then who created the one who created that creator, and so on, until we get to the eternal Creator who wasn’t created.

However, this principle is not absolute because there has to have been a starting point on the chain of events. According to Scripture, God is this starting point and everything else began from Him.

Taking the complexity and organization of the world around us into consideration, it’s glaring that it took an intelligent life form to bring it into existence rather than just a series of random events.

The Bible’s stance on God being eternal is consistent with its account of the universe’s origin story as well as everything it tells us about Him.

What can we learn from this?

God is too great to be limited to a concept like creation.

When Was God Created?

We already know that God was not created but is eternal. Trying to pinpoint a moment in time when God did not exist is simply impossible.

The Bible’s earliest recorded moment in Genesis 1:1 says,

“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

This means that even before the foundations of the earth were laid or it began, God already existed.

Bible Verses Related To Who Created God

“For by him, all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”

This verse sheds more light on God as the Creator, not the created. It explains that every single thing, seen or unseen, stems from God. The heavens in all its glory and host of angels, the devil, spiritual authorities, humans, in fact, all things, were created by God.

Not only were they created by and through Him, but they were also made for Him, to display His greatness and wisdom.

“Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.”

This verse establishes God’s ageless nature. It attempts to help us understand God’s eternity. Time exists inside of Him, so as long as it has been in existence or will exist, we can be sure that the Lord endures. Not just enduring, but reigning as the monarch of the universe.

“To the King of ages, immortal,

invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.”

“You alone are the Lord.

You have made the heavens,

The heaven of heavens with all their host,

The earth and all that is on it,

The seas and all that is in them.

You give life to all of them

And the heavenly host bows down before You.”

“Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed and were created.”

“For thus says the Lord, who created the heavens (He is the God who formed the earth and made it, He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited), “I am the Lord, and there is none else.”

“Yet for us, there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.”

“Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”

“And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”

“Who has performed and accomplished it, Calling forth the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the Lord, am the first, and with the last. I am He”

Conclusion

God has no creator. He simply has been and will always be King over all things. The human mind is limited in its understanding of the concept of His eternity and is simply incapable of fathoming God in His full glory.

But the Bible in 1 Corinthians 13:1 says that one day, the believer will see Him as He is.

Until then, instead of dwelling on the question of who created God, it is far more beneficial to the Christian to focus on discovering more about His nature. For it is with the understanding of  His nature that you begin to uncover who you are and what your purpose is on earth.
